8. Captain Phillips (Oct 11 US, Oct 18 UK)
Paul Greengrass returns for his first non-Matt Damon movie since 2006's superb United 93, this time also adapting a real-life incident to the screen, a biopic of Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), whose ship was taken hostage by Somali pirates in 2009. From what we've seen so far, it's safe to say that this seems to be another immaculately-composed thriller, shot through with Greengrass' typical attention to detail as far as both historical veracity and the action beats go. Hanks, sure to be heavily in the awards mixture this year, sports a Bostonian accent, one which has attracted unfair criticism online; just because it's a stark contrast to his regular voice doesn't make it bad!
The Buzz: The film premieres at the New York Film Festival at the end of September, so we'll know more then, though Hanks is widely expected to snag a Best Actor Oscar nomination for the role (it's the surer bet out of this and a Supporting Actor nod in Saving Mr. Banks). As for any nominations for Greengrass, the jury remains out...
