5. Dallas Buyers Club (Nov 1)
Further cementing Matthew McConaughey's tremendous resurgence as an actor, he's set to have yet another banner year in 2013, as he plays Ron Woodroof, a man who was diagnosed with HIV in 1986, and then began smuggling alternative medicine into the US with a transgender woman named Rayon (Jared Leto). The film follows not just his own fight against the virus, but also his clash with the government, who didn't much take to his surreptitious dealing of medication to HIV sufferers.
The Buzz: The set pictures and clips we've seen to date make it clear that McConaughey is taking the role extremely seriously, losing a significant amount of weight to resemble the gaunt Woodroof in the throes of his condition. We can expect Best Actor awards for him throughout the season even if the movie falls short of anything else, though keep an eye out for Jared Leto's outside-the-box performance as well. It premieres at Toronto next Saturday.
