10 Potentially Great Movies Ruined By One Character
9. Lieutenant Ford Brody - Godzilla
The news that Bryan Cranston was due to appear in the latest remake of Godzilla certainly raised the level of interest for many - what would normally be considered another run-of-the-mill big budget blockbuster in which the acting takes second place to the visuals became a much more promising prospect for those of us who like our films to have a well performed story with rounded characters. Obviously it was a huge disappointment when - spoiler alert! - his character was killed off, leaving his son Lieutenant Ford Brody, USN, played without charisma or any notable personality by Aaron Taylor-Johnson to dominate the screen for much of the remainder of the movie. It's a common complaint with the lead characters in a lot of blockbuster spectacles - the nondescript everyman type, generic to a tee with little that defines him with any complexity - from Battle L. A. to Avatar, their blandness is their unifying characteristic. The biggest mistake they made with the latest Godzilla was discarding Cranston's character for such a tiring stereotype - it might have elevated the film into the greatness it falls just short of.
