10 Potentially Great Movies Ruined By One Character

4. Kate Brewster - Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines

Just as the introduction of Indiana Jones's son Mutt Williams in The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came over as predictable box ticking by studio executives, so too was the "female" terminator in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines a twist on the franchise we should've expected. Still, it didn't detract from the movie quite as much as the character of Kate Brewster, played by Claire Danes. Obviously bereft of the character Sarah Connor - a strong presence characterised by an excellent performance from Linda Hamilton in the previous two Terminator movies - it was painfully obvious that the producers intended Kate Brewster to fill that character's boots. Hamilton had been offered a part in the film but had turned it down, saying, "She died halfway through and there was no time to mourn her. It was kind of disposable, so I said no thank you." Such a shame, then, that Brewster's character comes over as entirely disposable, adding little to the action other than filling an on-screen demographic gap. While Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines was far from being a truly awful film, it barely came close to the high standard set by James Cameron in the previous movies. Still, the removal of Kate Brewster and a tighter focus on John Connor would have gone some way to considerably improving the end result.
