10 Pre-2000 Movies With Special Effects That Still Hold Up Today

8. Honey, I Shrunk The Kids (1989)

Ok, there are a few dodgy moments in this one but, for the most part, it still holds up incredibly well. Let's get the bad out of the way first; the climactic fight between Anty and the Scorpion looks a little ropey nowadays, as does the bumblebee ride-along; but the rest of the movie still looks great. This is down to the fantastic set and prop design which instantly convinces the viewer that, despite looking pretty cool, it probably wouldn't be all that fun to be shrunk to the size of a pea and discarded in the back yard to fend for yourself. A lot of the fun from Honey, I Shrunk The Kids comes from seeing everyday locations from a unique perspective; leading to grass slides, cookies the size of a house, rivers of urine and the most terrifying instance of mowing the back yard you're ever likely to see. Aside from the two aforementioned scenes, the movie still looks incredible and the child actors do a great job of selling the danger that can come from being the size of Jiminy Cricket. But it's the little (no pun intended) touches that make the movie such a joy to watch; the kids need to leap over cracks in the floor, the broom has huge pieces of fluff attached to it and the back yard sprinkler sounds like an alien invasion. These all add up to a movie which, whilst showing its age in the more ambitious effects shots, still manages to convince and entertain in equal measure (pun intended).
