10 Pre-2000 Movies With Special Effects That Still Hold Up Today
9. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988)
Considering the success of this movie, it is quite unbelievable to think that there haven't been many films like it released since, with Space Jam and Looney Tunes: Back In Action being the most notable examples. Perhaps it is due to the fact that it would be incredibly difficult to make a movie that would be able to surpass it, both in terms of story and special effects. Who Framed Roger Rabbit is an absolute joy to watch, thanks to the incredibly creative ways that the filmmakers incorporated the effects into the film and the fact that the story holds up really well as a mature film noir; albeit one populated with cartoons. Robert Zemeckis also pulled off quite a coup by negotiating a deal which allowed both Warner Bros. and Disney characters in the same movie. It was a move which contributed to a feeling that cartoons really did exist in our reality and were simply actors for hire. Considering it was made 26 years ago, it is still completely believable; with scenes such as Bob Hoskins driving a cartoon car, wrestling with Roger in his office and, most impressively, his brief visit to Toontown all feeling completely natural. It is also a testament to Bob Hoskins' acting ability that we never once doubt that Roger is actually there in person, making Who Framed Roger Rabbit a bona fide classic that will be enjoyed for many years to come.
