10 Predictions For The Future of Cinema

4. The Academy Will Never Change, And Neither Will The MPAA

'The Dark Knight' deserved to at least be nominated for Best Picture over 'The Reader' in 2009. That€™s not bias, but common sense. It was intelligent, a real gamechanger, critically adored, incredibly popular. God only knows why dross like 'The Blind Side' and 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close' got nominated. Nothing changes, and any dreams I have had of winning an Oscar have vanished- they don€™t celebrate real achievement, at least not in the major categories. They are just great, expensive excuses for moguls like Weinstein to pat themselves on the back. And the membership is a joke- as revealed a while back, most of the academy members are old white men who haven€™t made a film in years. I despise political correctness, but where is the diversity? The same types of film win every year, and the general public are getting sick of it, as shown in the falling ratings of the broadcast year after year. It€™s like politics- it€™s never the guy who deserves it, it€™s the richest guy with the most marketing. And speaking of backwards, stubborn institutions run by white people€ If you haven€™t seen the excellent documentary 'This Film is Not Yet Rated', I suggest you do. The MPAA is full of dinosaurs, and the insitution should have been demolished years ago. Sadly, here it is, controlling even the studios- how many films have been awful because studios have bullied the filmmakers into toning down the content to avoid an NC-17 or achieve a PG-13 rating? Even Harvey Weinstein of all people fought against them with 'Bully' and lost! But I recall reading somewhere that the majority of classifiers are devout Christians with strong stances on sex and violence. We need impartiality, not bias! This is something I feel perhaps we need to sort out above anything else, but I have no idea how to reform such an influential colossus. Nobody dare stand up to it, or risk business. I understand why nobody has, and I wouldn€™t myself. Orwellian much?
