10 Problems Nobody Wants To Admit About The Original Star Wars Trilogy
6. There's Barely Any Female Characters
Star Wars isn't renowned for having a wide host of solid female characters, and that's because there's only one. Princess Leia is the only memorable woman inherent to the original trilogy, and though she's a tough cookie who doesn't take any sh*t from pretty much anyone, she's also flying solo on that front.
Try and conjure up an image of another solid female character from the original Star Wars movies. Chances are that all you got was "that stern woman who says 'The Emperor has made a critical error' in Jedi." Uh-huh. Okay, so at least there's Princess Leia, right? And she's pretty good female character and role model, all things considered, given that she's the best shot with a blaster out of everyone in the entire Star Wars universe, and is smart, capable and heroic. But she does get rescued a lot, too.
Anyway, Star Wars: Episode VII seems to have positioned a female character (played by Daisy Ridley) front and centre, perhaps as a means of correcting the gender imbalance inherent to this very famous galaxy far, far away...
