10 Problems With Batman V Superman Nobody Wants To Admit
5. Zack Snyder Can't Direct Action
Opinions vary on Zack Snyder as a director. Some think he peaked with his debut, the surprisingly impressive running-zombie remake of Dawn Of The Dead. Others think that Watchmen was about as good a film adaptation as you're going to get of Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore's groundbreaking graphic novel. There are many who will applaud his unique visual style, especially in the slow-mo battles of Spartan epic 300. But, really, how good is Snyder is a director? It's obvious that emotional beats aren't what get him off, since all of that rang so hollow in Man Of Steel (Pa Kent's death is still one of the most idiotic and avoidable in movie history). But without them his action scenes, for all their flair, have no grounding. It's not like Batman and Superman have to be having an emotional along with physical tear up, but the sort of stylised action Snyder goes in for is totally lacking in stakes or consequence. When all that matters is making a brawl look pretty there's no sense of weight to any impact, the audience is disconnected from the possibility of somebody dying and, really, nobody will care who wins. When the fight's the main event, that's a problem.
