10 Problems With Marvel's Phase 4 (And How To Solve Them)
5. Is Disney+ Really Going To Be Integral To The MCU?
Marvel Studios and Disney are making a lot of assumptions if they believe that their Disney+ shows are going to be able to reach the same number of people as their movies.
Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne projected in a recent note to investors that in the short term term, Disney+ 13 million subscribers to sign up by the end of 2020 (ie, by around the end of the first year or so).
It’s tricky to say exactly how many people went to see Spider-Man: Far From Home, but with the average ticket price in the US at around $9.00 and a box office of a billion dollars and climbing, it’s a safe bet that it was a lot more than 13 million households.
That means that it’s equally safe to say that a lot less people will be physically able to watch the Disney+ shows - at least, in the first two years, which happens to cover all of Phase 4 - than will be able to go to the cinemas to watch an MCU movie.
They’ve already said that the events of WandaVision, out on Disney+ sometime in Spring 2021, will tie into the events of Doctor Strange And The Multiverse Of Madness, which is coming out on May 7th 2021. However, less people will be able to see the former than the latter… so let’s hope what happens in WandaVision isn’t too important after all, right?
