10 Prolific Figures Heavily Influenced By H.P. Lovecraft
7. Alan Moore
Alan Moore’s extensive pantheon of work has included graphic novels like Watchmen and V for Vendetta as well work on characters like the Joker and Swamp Thing. However, his writing has gone from small Lovecraft references here and there to larger, more heavily-influenced works in his career.
Moore’s 2003 miniseries, Yuggoth Cultures and Other Growths was based on Lovecraft’s series of poems titled Fungi from Yuggoth, while his story in Black Dossier titled What Ho, Gods of the Abyss? contains numerous references to the author’s mythos (the title alone being a major reference).
Moore’s major Lovecraftian work was in his 2003 series, The Courtyard, adapted from his contribution to the 1994 Lovecraft tribute collection, The Starry Wisdom. In addition to numerous references to Lovecraft’s works, The Courtyard and its sequels, Neonomicon and Providence all function as continuations of the Cthulhu Mythos by Moore.
In an interview with Pádraig Ó Méalóid of Comicsbeat.com, Moore revealed that his recreations of Lovecraftian themes and concepts involved extensive research into both Lovecraft himself as well as American society in 1919, showing his passion for the project ran deep.
