10 Prolific Figures Heavily Influenced By H.P. Lovecraft
6. Gary Gygax
Even the world of tabletop role-playing games have some major influences from the master of cosmic horror. Gary Gygax, the co-creator of the popular Dungeons & Dragons series of games had previously cited Lovecraft’s work as one of several inspirations for the game in the Advanced D&D Dungeon Master’s Guide.
Elements of the Lovecraftian lore can be found in many elements of the role-playing games. Die-hard players likely recognize mind-flayers, also known as illithids, which are classic D&D enemies who bear striking resemblance to Cthulhu. Aboleths, cosmically significant creatures that reside slumbering in the depths of the ocean, are worshipped by a seaside town and referred to as the “God in the Waves”, very similar to Lovecraft’s story, Shadow over Innsmouth, in which the coastside town of Innsmouth worships a water-logged deity known as Dagon.
A reference book for various creatures and mythos in the game was released titled Deities & Demigods, and included several elements of Cthulhu mythos after a deal was struck with RPG publisher, Chaosium, for the rights.
To this day, Lovecraft's influence can be felt with devoted players creating their own immersive campaigns set within the Lovecraftian mythos.
