Anyone curious about this year’s Flatliners remake ought to check out The Lazarus Effect, which tells a similar story with a similar bunch of characters for the Twilight demographic.
Blumhouse’s first horror movie of 2015, The Lazarus Effect opened to decent box office and pleasant reviews which whets the appetite for an entertaining romp, but the movie quickly goes off the rails and never recovers. David Gelb’s film thinks it’s a modern Frankenstein, but even by the standards of PG-13 horror films, it’s pretty creaky and pedestrian.
Once again, a team of researchers (young and good-looking, you know the drill) discover a way of bringing the dead back to life, but have hitherto only been successful with animal subjects. If you just thought, “I bet lead researcher’s girlfriend dies in an accident, and when they revive her, she returns as some kind of monster”, you’re way ahead of the filmmakers.
