10 Psychedelic Horror Movies That Mess With Your Brain
3. Mandy
Receiving a five minute standing ovation after it screened at Cannes Film Festival, Mandy is the second film to come from the mind of visionary writer-director Panos Cosmatos (who's previous film was the equally psychedelic sci-fi flick Beyond The Black Rainbow).
Praised for its creativity and eye-popping visual style that drenches the film in bold and dazzling colour and plenty of smoke and grain to boot, this fantastical and phantasmagorical phenomenon is a bloody revenge thriller that sees logger Red (Nicholas Cage) hunt down a cult of drugged-up hippies after their leader (Linus Roache) burns his wife (Andrea Riseborough) to ashes in front of him.
A film that's more concerned with using emotion generated by its sublime visuals reminiscent of classic metal album artworks to guide the narrative rather than conventional storytelling, Mandy is cinema in its purest and most outrageous form. To really experience this film, it has to be seen on the biggest screen possible.
Containing everything from a transcendent score by the late Jóhann Jóhannsson (Mandy being one of the last projects he worked on), a sadomasochistic biker gang, a chainsaw duel, and an incredible performance by Cage, Mandy is everything a horror fan could possibly want.
