10 Psychedelic Horror Movies That Mess With Your Brain
2. Berberian Sound Studio
When mild-mannered English sound engineer Gilderoy (Toby Jones) is recruited to provide the sound for an Italian film titled Equestrian Vortex, his life slowly begins to descend into madness as he becomes enveloped in the world of sound he creates. However, this film is a long way from the tranquil nature documentaries he's used to. This film is a horrifically gory slasher film - and we don't see a single frame of it.
Instead, viewers can only imagine the horrors that are going on in this film from the sounds created. The deranged gibberish and snarling of a voice artist, the hacking of vegetables, and sizzling of water as some poor girl is scalded being some of the sickening sounds heard.
With the light of the projector whirring in the background and the red glow of the "Silenzio" sign casting an ominous glow in Gilderoy's booth, his isolated world continues to become separated from reality until the film itself distorts and melts until finally breaking, acting as a fitting metaphor for the sound engineer's own broken mindset.
Written and directed by Peter Strickland, Berberian Sound Studio is an intoxicating horror film the likes of which you probably haven't seen before.
