10 Psychological Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die

8. Session 9

The Silence Of The Lambs

Having to remove the asbestos from an abandoned mental hospital doesn't sound particularly fun, but someone's got to do it. Or at least that's the approach that Gordon Fleming and his crew adopt when they're tasked with fixing up this especially creepy hospital.

As you'd expect, tensions amongst the crew begin to rise and the discovery of audiotapes from the hospital's heyday does little to alleviate the hostile atmosphere. Things truly reach a fever pitch when one of the crew members goes missing and the rest of the team begin to explore the bowels of the hospital in the hopes of finding him.

Session 9 is the kind of slow-burning creep-fest that immediately burrows under your skin and leaves you feeling cold all over. The filmmakers made the smart decision to treat the asylum as its own imposing presence, making expert use of the location and conjuring up some of the creepiest imagery ever put to film.

Sadly it flew under the radar on release and outside of genre enthusiasts, Session 9 rarely gets the love and respect that it so clearly deserves. It's a true testament to what can be achieved with a modest budget and a great central concept.
