10 Pulp Comic Book Heroes Who Deserve An Epic Movie Comeback

10. John Carter

Truly the Godfather of the pulps. And while most audiences will likely associate the name with box office failure, John Carter was one of the most powerful characters on the page. He debuted in magazine serial format in 1912 and is often credited by many famous sci-fi creators as being a huge inspiration on their work such as Star Wars, Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, Superman, James Cameron's Avatar, and even the literary works of Ray Bradbury. Although he doesn't stand where most pulp characters typically do, in the shadows of crime ridden streets, he and his co-stars appeared in nearly a dozen collected novels spanning 1912 to 1943. He found his way into comic books and other works of fiction as well as becoming a character in Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. If there is one character that the entire pulp era draws its inspiration from, it's John Carter. Andrew Stanton's adaptation of the first novel A Princess of Mars, later titled John Carter, was considered by Disney to be a box office disaster. However the film captured the spirit of author Edgar Rice Burrough's original stories and still has a very strong and vocal fan base. Most audience reactions to the film were positive and it would do the character justice to see him in a sequel.
