10 Radical Ideas To Reboot Wolverine On Film
9. X Marks The Spot
“Sometimes it seems that in mutant heaven, there are no pearly gates, but instead revolving doors.”
That’s the wit and wisdom of Professor Charles Xavier, from X-Factor #70 (care of renowned writer Peter David). Xavier, of course, was the other major X-Men character to kick the bucket in Logan.
But then he was murdered in X-Men: The Last Stand, too. They didn’t even try to explain how he worked his way out of that one. The fact is that any character can be resurrected at any time, for any reason and with any explanation - or lack of.
In Wolverine’s case, suspension of disbelief is even easier. He’s two centuries old (in the movies) with a magic healing factor. Is it totally implausible that he could dig himself out of that shallow grave a day or so later?
As for recasting, you could easily explain away a different appearance by claiming that the near-death experience shocked his healing factor into overdrive and rejuvenated/mutated his physique.
Of course, Logan received significant critical acclaim for its thoughtful treatment of the archetype of the dying warrior. Walking back the ending could undermine tha- oh, please. It’s Fox - they have the ethical and artistic scruples of plague rats.
