Nominated for: Worst Supporting Actor (Danny DeVito) - 1993 Batman Returns saw Tim Burton, off the back of the success of his first Gotham venture, given absolutely free reign to make the movie that he wanted. What he returned was an even more heightened slice of gothic expressionism and dark grotesquery, and nowhere was this more embodied than in Burton's take on classic umbrella-wielding Batman gang boss The Penguin, here reconfigured as a deformed freak living in a creepy sewer lair. Comic book purists objected to this re-imagining of a favourite character, while audiences looking for a family friendly adventure found Burton and Danny DeVito's Oswald Cobblepot simply too dark and disturbing. While the backlash against the film that may have resulted in The Penguin's Razzie nomination dismissed Batman Returns as being creepy and grotesque, this for many people was the main strength of the film. As subsequent Batman movies swapped gothic for camp, Batman Returns and its Penguin only looked better and better.
