10 Razzie Nominees Now Embraced As Classics

8. The Fifth Element

Nominated for: Worst Supporting Actress (Milla Jovovich), Worst New Star (Chris Tucker) - 1998 Deeply divisive on its release, Luc Besson's ultra-stylised Jean-Paul Gaultier designed sci-fi blockbuster was dismissed by many critics as excessively camp, hard to follow and lacking in substance. In particular, people had trouble warming to gibberish-talking ginger Leelo (model Milla Jovovich), the eponymous fifth element, and loud mouthed, in-your-face talk-show host Ruby Rhod (comedian Chris Tucker). While their far-from-naturalistic performances may still alienate some audiences, the film's lavish, pulpy, comic book stylings have made it a popular cult hit. Arguably it is the perfect vehicle for Jovovich's 'talents'. With a 71% from the critics and an 87% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is increasingly well regarded - last year, Time Out voted it the 42nd greatest sci-fi move of all time, just above Total Recall, District 9, and Ghostbusters.
