Jason Statham rose to prominence overnight by starring in Guy Ritchie's hit gangster flick Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, playing the part of small-time criminal Bacon.

The Stath secured the role while working as a con artist himself, selling fake perfume and jewellery on the streets of London.

Through his modelling contacts at French Connection, Statham secured a meeting with Ritchie, who set up a most peculiar audition, challenging Statham to impersonate a street vendor selling knock-off wares.

Unsurprisingly, he nailed the audition - it being his actual life and all - leading to Statham being cast as Bacon, who kicks the movie off peddling his stolen goods to the masses.

Ritchie clearly saw something authentic in Statham, and it was for damn good reason.
