10 Real Reasons These Actors Were Cast In Major Movie Roles
6. Chloƫ Grace Moretz Tricked Martin Scorsese Into Believing She Was English - Hugo
Hot off the success of her hysterical role in Kick-Ass, 13-year-old Chloƫ Grace Moretz was cast as female lead Isabelle in Martin Scorsese's adventure epic Hugo.
But Moretz employed some sneaky subterfuge to win the role, tricking Scorsese into believing she was an English native by refusing to drop her English accent until the end of the audition. In actual fact, Moretz was born in Atlanta, Georgia and sports a natural American accent. She said of the ruse:
"[Scorsese] flew Asa [Butterfield] and I out to New York to audition in front of him, and I spoke in a British accent the whole time. I'd lived in London for five months when I was filming Kick-Ass, so I knew the rhythm of the accent, which is one of the main things you have to pick up.
There's a huge difference in the way the British act and speak, and I stayed in character with Marty until the end. When I thanked him and walked out, he said, 'Hold on, did I hear an American accent?' I said, 'Maybe', and he replied, 'You tricked me.' But it worked because I got the part. Sometimes you have to do whatever you can to get the role."
Hoodwinking arguably the world's greatest living filmmaker sure is a bold move, but Moretz clearly left quite the impression on Marty, and he ultimately cast her in the part.
