The Winter Soldier did something no one really expects from the Marvel movies; it had something genuine to say. Okay, so all the films have a message of some sorts (The First Avenger says its whats inside that counts; Iron Man says don't lose sight of what's right; The Incredible Hulk says Bruce Banner can't sustain his own film) but this was the first time one of them had actually felt relevant. And boy was it refreshing. Since Edward Snowden leaked key NSA documents revealing they had been spying on over a billion people, government snooping has moved from the realm of seventies thrillers to the real world. And with Operation: Insights mass profiling of potential dangers and H.Y.D.R.A. hidden within a seemingly clandestine organisation, The Winter Soldier couldnt feel more relevant. Theres one issue with that; the film was all shot and heading to the edit at the time all the NSA leaks came to light, and its pure coincidence that real-world events turned into an area shared with those of the MCU. It all still adds something to the film and highlights how suspicion of those claiming to protect us has always festered, even before Snowdens leaks. Its just annoying that none of it was intended to be there. What did you think of Captain America: The Winter Soldier? Was it as good as The Avengers (we think so) or bit of a dud? And what bits annoyed you? Let us know it all down in the comments.
