10 Reason Mad Max: Fury Road Should Win Best Picture

6. It Has Something To Say

Fury Road could have been content to be nothing more than a dispensary for high-octane action sequences, and action fans would still be praising it for decades to come. However, Miller had something more on his mind when he made Fury Road; he wanted to make it a wide-ranging statement on modern society, as well as an all-time great action feature. Fury Road had a decidedly feminist slant. The film tells the story of cadre of female victims breaking free from an oppressive patriarchy while simultaneously deconstructing the most toxic elements of masculinity as embodied by the insane dictator Immortan Joe. Fury Road€™s political message was no accident; Miller tapped Eve Ensler, noted feminist and scribe of The Vagina Monologues, to act as a consultant on the film; she helped Miller refine Fury Road€™s themes and female characters. Miller€™s conscientious approach to his themes struck a chord with feminist critics; many have praised Fury Road€™s progressive representation of its female characters. The Academy tends to award movies with high-minded themes that examine society and politics at large, which this big, summer blockbuster refreshingly does.
