10 Reasons Baby Driver Could Be The Surprise Movie Of The Summer
3. It’s Not A Sequel Or A Remake
Not that there’s anything wrong with sequels or remakes, nor with reboots, reimaginings, rehashes or any other re-attempts. There’s a lot of enjoyment to be had tracking our favourite characters through their cinematic universes and admiring just how a long-running series fits together.
But at some point, franchise fatigue sets in, and we start to wonder if we really need another movie with a character well past their prime. Sequels also tend to become safe, retreading previous plot points and not really challenging their characters; you know Jack Sparrow’s going to survive because they’ll want to do another one. This summer’s already seen a couple of disappointing sequels which no one really asked for, including returns to the worlds of Alien and Pirates of the Caribbean.
What those films lack is how incredible the first instalments in their respective series were – because they were new, they surprised us, and they stood on their own feet as seriously impressive pieces of cinema. Which can’t be said for Covenant but perhaps can for Baby Driver.
