Probably one of the toughest behind-the-scenes facets of filmmaking is scheduling actors. Sometimes projects will fall through or get delayed and then filmmakers lose actors they had staked their entire project on, resulting in total ruin. Given the persistent rumours Zack Snyder has been courting Joaquin Phoenix for the role of Lex Luthor, it's possible that the famously enigmatic actor couldn't make their proposed shooting schedule, and so in order to secure an actor of his caliber, they opted to move the project back. Delaying projects is a risky business in filmmaking, as it can often result in other actors dropping out, so if scheduling is a reason, you can bet it was to ensure that they secured a high-class talent. Still, if this was the reason, it's likely Warner would have just come out and said it, because it doesn't sound damaging in the least, especially if they end up announcing that Phoenix has in fact got the role.
