10 Reasons Captain America: Civil War Beat Batman v Superman

2. The Villain Has Motivation

There is so much to dislike about BvS. But perhaps the worst thing of all was the villain. Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor, beyond being absolutely nothing like Luthor from the comics, is just a very bad character.

Not one, single action Luthor takes in the entire movie makes even the slimmest amount of sense. He says his father beat him when he was a kid and that taught him either god is powerful and not good or good and not powerful. And somehow that means Superman must die?

He also somehow engineers this conflict between Batman and Superman, a plan which hinges on Batman being the most agreeable pawn on the face of the planet. He hopes Superman will kill Batman because...why?

We don't know why he hates Batman. Just because he's a hero I guess? And then he creates Doomsday for what purpose? Because having an unstoppable, uncontrollable Kryptonian killing machine around will help him?

Contrast this with Daniel Bruhl's Helmut Zemo. Here's someone whose plan makes perfect sense. Zemo is from Sokovia in this movie and his family was killed in Ultron's attack. He knows he can't destroy the Avengers himself, so he doesn't try to do it. He also doesn't try and create some unstoppable killing machine he can't control. Instead, he has the Avengers tear each other apart.

It's a plan that makes sense and as such, has a chance of actually working. As a matter of fact, it does work. Zemo gets exactly what he wanted by the end—the Avengers are fractured.
