10 Reasons The Comic Book Movie Fad Is Here To Stay

5. They Can Corner The Female Audience

It's fair to say that female moviegoers are underrepresented in a lot of mainstream films. A recent study from Sand Diego State University entitled "It Man's (Celluloid) World: On-Screen Representations of Females in the Top 100 Movies of 2013" unveiled shocking statistics about the dearth of female cinematic characters: out of a sample of 2,300 characters only 30% of all speaking characters were female and only 15% were protagonists. Women's attendance at comic book movies is already healthy, but producing female-centric comic book films will only increase interest from female ticket buyers. There are a bevy of women superheroes waiting to be adapted to the big screen like Huntress, Black Canary, and She-Hulk. Comic book movies are uniquely poised to offer female viewers stories about heroic protagonists they can relate to. According to the Motion Picture Association of America, women comprised 52% of 2013€™s moviegoing audiences. Appealing to a wide female audience will be pivotal in ensuring the comic book genre€™s longevity. Once features like DC€™s upcoming Wonder Woman hit theatres, an entire generation of young female viewers will see themselves represented on the big screen. Hopefully, it will inspire future generations of young women to tell their own cinematic tales of superheroic women.
