10 Reasons Critics Are Calling Interstellar A Disappointment
7. The Plot Is Corny & Contrived
One of the biggest concerns for some audiences has been the trailer's emphasis on the idea that "love is the only thing that can transcend time and space", a concept that sounds powerful as a quick snippet in a trailer, but in sustaining an entire movie, it could easily give way to cornball hokum. Sadly, many reviews have taken the film to task for hammering this concept home as its central theme, when it's obviously not something found in fact, but a sentimental affectation to stir up the masses. Also, Nolan's movies are no stranger to contrivance (look at The Dark Knight Rises), and Interstellar is reportedly little different, as evidenced by the shocking number of outlets (high-profile ones, no less) that criticised the film for suffering from gaping plot holes and lapses in logic. Indiewire: " borderline corny...Much of the blunt dialogue strains from simple melodrama" The Playlist: "Droningly familiar emotional and plot beats that youve seen all too many times before... sentiments as close, and as cheap, as any of the offerings at your local Hallmark card retailer." The Guardian: "Overbearing, tangled up in plot-lines." Badass Digest: "Emotions ...laid on as thick and clumsy as the lipstick on a seven year old getting into her mothers make-up...Love as a universal constant... cringe-worthy ...dead on arrival emotionally." IGN: "Problematic logical through-line and narrative disconnect...Interstellars story is peppered with logical breaks, but they are for the most part pardonable...It drives certain themes home relentlessly. " Topless Robot: " rather tired thesis about love being the real strongest force in the universe." Screen Daily: "Nolan desperately out all the stops to deliver powerfully heartrending moments, sometimes to great effect and sometimes in ways that feel terribly manipulative." The Hollywood Reporter: "Hokey contrivances..." The Movie Minute: "Big chunks of the story don't make sense."
