10 Reasons Edge Of Tomorrow Is The Most Important Blockbuster Of 2014

10. Emily Blunt Is A Phenomenal Action Star

For years, Emily Blunt has been making a name for herself amongst critics and audiences. With beauty and talent in spades, it€™s not surprising she€™d first come to be known through comedy dramas and period dramas, before more recently gaining recognition in mid-budget blockbusters like Looper and The Adjustment Bureau. The Adjustment Bureau is especially important as it€™s fairly typical of American tentpoles€™ female characters. Namely that Blunt€™s character Elise is beautifully bewitching, but lacks any agency whatsoever. The same cannot be said of her character here, Rita Vrataski, a.k.a. The Angel of Verdun / Full Metal B*tch. She is a warrior of the highest grade, with an aerial fighting style that brings her in close for the kill. Scarlett Johansson€™s Black Widow is the only comparison when searching for strong female leads in action blockbusters, and when one finally does come along, both character and actress deserve recognition. Blunt is cast opposite Tom Cruise, perhaps the biggest action star the world has ever known, and it speaks volumes that her character has to teach his how to fight. It begs for more roles like this for Blunt, and more female characters like this in general.
