10 Reasons Edge Of Tomorrow Is The Most Important Blockbuster Of 2014
3. It Could Ignite The Time Loop Genre
Just as Primer proved the time loop genre can work on a shoestring budget, Edge of Tomorrow proves it works at the opposite end of the spectrum, with more money than you could possibly count. Picture Huell taking five on Walts enormous stacks of cash in Breaking Bad, multiplying that by two, and turning it into a movie. The genre is understandably a niche one; unless you have bottomless pockets, most people are afraid to go near it because they think it needs a lot of money a misconception proved wrong by Primer. The knock-on effect means that, because very few films even exist in the genre, there are even fewer success stories to serve as proof to studios that its possible to succeed in this territory. It takes the success of a tentpole of a scale of Edge of Tomorrow to ignite the genre, leading to more low- and mid-budget movies getting made, inevitably then leading to further high-budget projects. In the right hands, the results can be amazing. Like Primer, like Source Code, and like 12 Monkeys, Edge of Tomorrow gets it right.
Movie / TV enthusiast with a DVD and Blu-ray collection bigger than I'd care to admit. If anyone is offering creative / furniture solutions to house them, I'm all ears.
