10 Reasons The Fault In Our Stars Is The Best Book-Film Adaptation In Years
9. Stellar Direction
Josh Boone directs The Fault In Our Stars with real skill. He is able to bring the world of Green's book to the screen in almost exactly the way it was imagined by many of the fans. Boone, who previously had only 2012 dramedy Stuck In Love on his filmography, manages the film's intricacies with great subtlety and skill. He brings a visual flair to the story-telling, whether it's the delicate framing of intimate and important character scenes or the Sherlock-esque graphics that illustrate text message and email exchanges. He is also careful to portray the effects of illness on his characters with nuance and care, rather than smashing his audience in the face with illness. Gus' amputated limb is never a huge part of the narrative and Hazel's oxygen tank isn't used to create "grief porn" - a concern for many before the film's release. It's clear that Boone has a real affection for the characters in The Fault In Our Stars and he draws great performances from his entire cast, who are all on top form. Without Boone, the film would not have been the success that it is.
