10 Reasons An All-Female Ghostbusters Is A Terrible Idea
3. Melissa McCarthy
Of all the casting choices to expect in the new Ghostbusters, the dead-cert you can count on is Melissa McCarthy. Not only is she pure box office dynamite at the moment, she's an Academy Award-nominated actress, and has worked with director Paul Feig on his last two movies, Bridesmaids and The Heat. If she doesn't end up as one of the main characters in Ghostbusters, it would be a huge shock. A lot of the early comments about the new movie were critical of McCarthy's casting, that the humour would lean too heavily on jokes about the actress's weight and her tendency to fall over in most of her films. Even ignoring that, her obnoxiousness is off-putting to many (though not enough to deny her box office success, apparently), who suspect her loud, boisterous brand of comedy will result in a film vastly inferior to the hilarious wit of the original. If McCarthy tones down her shtick a little and is perhaps kept to a minimal role (with no defecation in a sink and less fat jokes), then she might fit in fine, though that won't stop many groaning at her probable inclusion.
