It takes a lot of balls from a business perspective to fully commit to killing off your series' most popular character, especially as in the case of Wolverine, the actor playing him is hardly over the hill or phoning it in.

Logan dies at the end of the movie, and it's a glorious, emotionally shattering moment because while Logan will eventually be recast, this really feels like a definitive end of a significant chapter of superhero movie lore.

Yes, an X-23 movie will probably happen in a few years, but that can easily operate on its own without tarnishing Logan's legacy. The other X-Men movies have all been in the business of setting up the next one, but Logan really had no such objective, which must've been incredibly creatively freeing for James Mangold and Hugh Jackman in particular.
