10 Reasons Mad Max: Fury Road Is The Weirdest Blockbuster Ever

10. The 'Main Character' Isn't Even The Main Character

Fury Road is a continuation of the Mad Max series, so you'd be forgiven for assuming Max Rockatansky (this time played by Tom Hardy, not Gibbo) would remain the central hero. His name's right there in the title, in case you had any doubt as to who the film was supposed to be about. Hard lines, Rockatansky fans - Max is a bigger mystery here than he's ever been, and he's basically the supporting act in his own movie. Hardy gets around 20 lines of dialogue as Max, while the only clue viewers new to the universe will get as to his backstory will find it only in intermittent flashbacks. The rest of it is just guesswork. Really, the story here revolves around Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa, and the five 'wives', including Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's Splendid, Riley Keough's Capable and Zoe Kravitz's Toast, escaping from the clutches of a pustule-covered warlord. Max takes a backseat, as Miller takes more interest in developing the female characters.
