10 Reasons Mad Max: Fury Road Is The Weirdest Blockbuster Ever
8. It's Action-Heavy, But CGI Is Minimal
Again, as with Miller's choice of embracing feminism ideals for his movie, it seems odd to label the decision to forego copious CGI in Fury Road a "weird" one. But such is the state of the modern blockbuster that Fury Road's action sequences appearing visceral and real is disarmingly strange. Look, there's Tom Hardy really dangling his head out of a moving truck! And look, there are dozens of crazy stuntmen flying at once through the air on poles and driving souped-up rust-buckets at top speeds! You wouldn't see this kind of stuff in the MCU, and what really jars about Miller's film is it'll have you trying to figure out how cinema has coped without such an emphasis on practicality for all these years. According to Miller, CGI was predominantly used to remove stunt wires and car rigs and touch up the look of the surrounding environment - that aside, the stunts are mostly all real. Post-Fury Road, it's going to be weird to return to movies that use CGI in the place of practical stuntwork and effects as Miller and his team do so effectively here.
