10 Reasons Mad Max: Fury Road Is The Weirdest Blockbuster Ever

4. Atomic Mutants Are Main Characters

Yes, Tom Hardy is one of the most maddeningly beautiful men alive, while Charlize Theron and the Wives aren't bad to look at either, but Fury Road is one of those rough-and-ready blockbusters that foregoes putting the vanity of its actors first. What's more, half of the movie's characters are hideous irradiated mutants that most blockbusters would be afraid to linger on for fear of getting an R-rating. Pretty boys Nicholas Hoult and Josh Helman, for example, play crazy, tumour-addled soldiers covered in white tribal powder, while Hugh Keays-Byrne's Immortan Joe is a warty, obese grotesque of a villain. And Miller doesn't at all care if you're repulsed by these weirdos. Special mention must also be made to the biggest freak in Miller's universe: the guitar-shredding, heavy metal-loving, flame-throwing Doof Warrior. He's a unique creation all of Miller's own, and it's easy to see why he's already become a cult figure - a blind, red onesie-wearing mutant playing double-axe astride a giant, moving soundsystem, this is someone whom you actually wish led modern armies into battle.
