10 Reasons The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Best Days Are Behind It
4. The Villains Are Getting Worse & Worse
This one's hard to argue, because it's plainly apparent. But if we're being totally honest, the MCU hasn't really ever had an amazing villain in its mitts, save for Loki, who has been overworked to the point of exhaustion anyway and is consistently used as a "fallback" for the screenwriters because they know how popular he is. With every additional film, though, the villains are becoming blander and blander - pretty much to the point of interchangeability. Iron Man gave us Jeff Bridges as the first ever MCU villain, and he did a good job. Even Tim Roth - often criticised as the villain in The Incredibly Hulk - proved marginally interesting, despite the negative connotations. But for a while now (and it must be said that we're discounting Loki in all this, simply because he is charismatic and fun to watch), the MCU villains have all been made of the same stuff: angry, shouty alien folk - all completely forgettable. Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Solider, and even Guardians of the Galaxy, all featured boring, unmemorable villains who suffered from a lack of depth and personality. And here we are complaining that Jesse Eisenberg is going to pay Lex Luthor in the new Batman Vs. Superman movie? We should be celebrating the fact that Warner Bros. are willing to take risks, instead of just employing the same old conventional "bad guys."
