8 Reasons Not To Get Excited For Avengers: Infinity War
6. Joss Whedon Isn't Writing Infinity War
Losing Joss Whedon as a director is no huge crime. Not that he's not a good director (making Serenity is more than enough to allow him that claim), but it's not his shining talent, his raison d'ĂȘtre. He's an amazing screenwriter. In terms of crafting stories with a huge of amount of characters and being able to not only give each one a different voice, but their own little mini-story arc, his is a rare skill. He can find human moments in stories about gods. It's rare to find yourself watching a billion-dollar action movie and wishing for the action to just stop for a moment so the characters could sit down and have a chat. That's how talented Whedon is at crafting character. As unwieldy as the film was, every Avenger had something going on. Cap had his mini-'language' story arc, Tony confronted his hubris, Banner was struggling to process his guilt, Scarlet Widow was haunted by her past, Thor was haunted by his future, Hawkeye had some of the best moments in the film, just sitting and talking to his wife, Laura. In the first movie, the character moments were often, and brilliant. In Ultron, less so. They shrank to the background amidst talks of Infinity Stones and constant globe-hopping action. That appears to be the trend that the Avengers movies is on and with Joss Whedon sitting the next instalment out, fans should worry about action overwhelming character to an even greater extent.
