10 Reasons Star Wars Sequels Are Still Superior To The Prequels
6. The Humour Is Far Better
Neither of the later Star Wars trilogies recaptured the frequent laughs throughout the Original Trilogy, but the Sequels definitely came a lot closer.
The comedy throughout the Sequel Trilogy is a little hit-or-miss, mainly because it was sometimes deployed too frequently and thus depleted the tension in the movies, but at least some of it landed. There are actually some hilarious moments in the Sequels, especially in The Force Awakens.
In contrast, the Prequels often took themselves far too seriously anyhow but when they dabbled in comedy it rarely, if ever, worked.
Of course, Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best) is what everyone still remembers (and yes, that character is every bit as awful as you recall) but the overwhelming majority of the comedy in the Prequels is similarly ineffective. You'll get a few unintentional laughs here and there but that's about it.
