10 Reasons Star Wars Visions Is The Future Of The Franchise
4. It's Not Bound By Physics
In the prequel trilogy, George Lucas leaned heavily into then cutting-edge CGI, depicting operatic lightsaber battles of ridiculously acrobatic proportions. In essence, the Jedi went from magic wielding samurai to superheroes. While the effects were good for their time, now that more than a decade has passed, the marriage between live action and CGI environments have begun to show their age and are less than convincing in parts.
Even at the time, the prequels' CGI was at times stodgy, and could easily take audiences out of the action on display. The medium of animation sidesteps this problem by having the action take place in a wholly cartoon environment, dodging the problems that come with coupling CGI and live action entirely.
In Visions, the animators are free to depict lightsaber contests on a scale that could not be easily pulled off in live action. This is evident most notably in the episode The Twins, which contains perhaps the most over-the-top and large scale lightsaber duel in franchise history.
A sequence like this would be unconvincing in live action, even laughable, but it works in the medium of animation so well that its impossible to take your eyes off the screen as it unfolds. Visions is only increasing the scope of Star Wars' action, which will allow the series to continue raising the stakes.
