If you were a fan of Doctor Who, you're used to seeing Matt Smith play the hero. He was a fantastic Doctor, and was extremely popular with fans of the series.

Jumping into another time travel franchise, Smith was cast against type in Terminator: Genisys. His role in the film was kept under wraps pretty much until the movie was released, but early on, it's revealed that he is connected to Skynet, as he attacks John Connor in the beginning of the film. Then, as events unfold, it's explained that he's not just related to Skynet - he pretty much IS Skynet.

Now, while that's straying from the source material a little, it does make sense. If Skynet is a machine consciousness that has become aware, its origins would have to be in its operating system, and it shouldn't be expected that said consciousness function the same way as our own.

One central controlling point for the entire machine "race" isn't that hard to buy, and as its physical embodiment, Smith does a fine job with limited screen time. In fact, if there's an issue with Smith in the movie, it's the fact that there isn't enough of him. He makes a more convincing villain than Jason Clarke as John Connor in any case.
