10 Reasons Tim Burton's Batman Movies Are Still The Best
4. Batman Returns Is The Weirdest Blockbuster Ever Made
There are many mysteries in life that will never be resolved. Things like the identity of Jack the Ripper, what happened to the crew of the Mary Celeste and how did Two And A Half Men manage to run for 12 seasons. But without a doubt the biggest is how a studio greenlit Batman Returns. Not because its bad, but because its deeply, deeply weird. Theres a perverted Penguin man, who likes to sexually harass any woman he meets and whose grand scheme is to destroy Gotham with an army of rocket equipped penguins. He also rides around in a giant, duck shaped car. Theres a woman running around in a skin tight S&M outfit. Shes also brought back to life after being mauled by cats. Oh, and theres a gang of murderous clowns who kidnap children. And thats just the tip of the iceberg. Batman Returns was made at a time long before the Marvel formula, and since Batman was such a big hit they wanted Burton to come back at any cost. He agreed, as long as he could do whatever he pleased, and the wonderfully odd Batman Returns is the result. But after parents complained it was too gloomy and strange, Warner Bros. wanted it toned down for the next movie. This led to Burton leaving Batman Forever, and Joel Schumacher and his Bat nipples came in. Great call Warner Bros.
