The announcement that Tom Holland would be the new Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe wasn't met with quite the same level of outcry as Andrew Garfield's (but he's a limey!). Instead, the most common reaction has been a bit of a shrug followed by scanning his IMDb profile, followed by another shrug. When Tobey Maguire took on the role of Peter Parker, he was already semi-well-known for his parts in The Ice Storm, Pleasantville, and The Cider House Rules. Andrew Garfield had just appeared opposite Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network, and was part of the ensemble for the award-winning Never Let Me Go. They were known quantities. Which meant that many people had already made their mind up about them when they were cast, and already made up their minds about their suitability as Spider-Man before their respective films came out. With only seven film roles to his name (with three of those released in 2015), Holland isn't burdened by such expectations. Nobody knows what he'll be like. Good.
