10 Reasons Why 2016's Blockbuster Season Sucked
5. Terrible Writing
It used to be the case that the script was the most important part of any movie. You could have all the spectacle in the world, but if the words that came out of the character's mouths weren't worth a damn, then nobody would buy into the product. These days, blockbuster cinema is pretty much all style over substance, with the script nothing more than exposition used to tie action sequences together.
Its become an increasingly common complaint against Hollywood's big-budget offerings in recent years, and in 2016 audiences were subjected to plenty of less-than-stellar screenwriting. Independence Day: Resurgence, Batman V Superman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, Suicide Squad, Now You See Me 2 and Jason Bourne to name but a few all failed to live up to their potential through sub-par scripts, a problem that both fans and critics have noticed.
In today's technologically-savvy world, film fans are smarter than they've ever been and need more than two hours of flashy visuals to keep them interested. 'It all starts with the script' used to be the mantra that the movie industry lived by, now it seems to be nothing more than an afterthought.
