10 Reasons Why 2016's Blockbuster Season Sucked
4. Positive Reviews Are Basically Worthless
Now that anybody with a computer and an internet connection can post movie reviews online for the world to see, the once-respected world of film criticism is becoming increasingly irrelevant. While its hardly a game-changer given that everybody has a different opinion on what they enjoy cinematically, positive reviews are nowhere near the endorsement of quality they once were.
Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad were savaged by most critics, but were much more well-received by the DC Comics fanbase and ultimately earned over $1.5bn in combined box office totals. X-Men: Apocalypse, Warcraft, Ice Age: Collision Course, Jason Bourne, Independence Day: Resurgence and The Legend of Tarzan were all deemed poor enough to end up on the wrong side of Rotten Tomatoes' aggregated review system, yet they all earned at least $350m worldwide.
At the other end of the spectrum the likes of The BFG, Pete's Dragon, Kubo and the Two Strings and The Nice Guys were some of the most well-reviewed movies of the summer, but failed to connect with audiences and ended up as commercial disappointments. This just reinforces the notion that a familiar title and a huge marketing budget is the key to box office success as opposed to making a good movie, which seems all kinds of backwards.
