10 Reasons Why DC Should Give Up On Its Cinematic Universe
1. Cinematic Universes Aren't All That Cool Anymore
Sad to say, but 'cinematic universes' are becoming all kinds of cringe now.
It's hard to pinpoint exactly when the notion started to bore. Dracula Untold certainly flew close with its attempts to create a Vampire universe along with I, Frankenstein, and then there was Universal's attempts to start one with Dark Universe - a series that would've seen Tom Cruise team up with the Wolfman and Russell Crowe's Dr. Jekyll - and both could lay claim to nailing the proverbial cinematic universe coffin to the wall.
Hellboy's currently gunning for one of its own, which is fine, really, seeing as how the Mignolaverse has long been an established presence in Dark Horse, but it's the phrase that really gets underneath the skin. DC have tried to shirk it by replacing 'cinematic' with 'extended', but it's still the same stale, pale imitation of the Marvel original.
And besides, they just aren't as fresh or exciting as they once were. It feels as though every franchise these days is doing its best to weave a convoluted interconnected web of sequels, prequels and threequels by reading a very poor translation of the Marvel playbook, complete with contrivances and after-credits sequences galore.
DC would do well to buck this trend and reinstate themselves as true innovators in the genre, because, as things currently stand, Marvel are the only guys who have gotten this whole universe deal-y right.
So come on, Warner Bros., drop this boring fascination with connecting everything with, well, everything, and do something new again.
