10. An Amazing Premise
Let me get this right out of the way early. From the very second I heard and processed Loopers core premise a few months ago I was hooked. I
had to see this movie. Its about an assassin employed in the present (which is technically our future) to execute mob targets sent from further ahead in time. But trouble brews when he fails to successfully kill his future self. In a way, its so simple, so pure, that I cant actually believe it hasnt been done before. But it hasnt. To my mind, nothing even remotely similar has either (Terminator maybe?). Of course, theres much more to it than simply the concept, but a good premise is the hook that pulls you in to the theatre. For me, Loopers premise up to Phillip K. Dick standards, except wait, its completely of writer/director Rian Johnsons own machination. With story chops like Johnsons Id be very surprised if he didnt have an Oscar or two in his trophy cabinet before the end of the decade.
