9. Perfect Pacing
Loopers pacing is perfect and if not perfect, its about as close as it gets. Its moves fast enough so that we can never fully scrutinise the laws of its time travel (lets face it, despite not being real, time travel is immensely complex, so anything that attempts to utilize it as a plot device is always opening itself up to critical analysis); but it manages to slow down to just the right tempo when necessary for us to be able to nurture a proper emotional connection to the characters. Pacing is of utmost importance to a complex and layered film like Looper. Hell, its of utmost importance throughout cinema. But the more textured a story is, the more confusing, convoluted and ultimately boring it can potentially become if proper heed is not paid to the pacing. A testament then to Rian Johnson, that despite Loopers deeply cerebral story, it never seems to rush or dawdle; it moves at exactly the right speed.
