6. An Impressively Twisted Supervillain
While too many heroes can spoil the action-packed broth and leave audiences wondering just who it is they're supposed to care for, an unconvincing bad guy can transform a potential fun film into a tedious waste of time. Furious 7's central villain Deckard Shaw, played with steely-eyed precision by Jason Statham, falls somewhere in the middle when it comes to the scale of cinematic bad guys. Statham certainly has real presence when he's on screen, but compared to Hugh Keays-Byrne's Immortan Joe he's a level-headed pussycat. Immortan Joe cuts an impressive figure, his deformed body and skull-like breathing apparatus giving him a monstrous edge, while his megalomaniacal streak and dictatorial control over his people adds a tone of delusion which makes him all the more dangerous. If the best villains are truly demented then Immortan Joe is a truly great one.
